The Castle of Dreams
King Ludwig II of Bavaria began construction of Neuschwanstein in 1869. He was inspired by medieval legends, the music of Richard Wagner, and the romantic ideals of an earlier age. The castle was never fully completed — Ludwig died in 1886, just days after being removed from power, and Neuschwanstein was opened to the public shortly after his death.
Neuschwanstein has become one of the most recognised buildings in the world. Walt Disney drew inspiration from the castle when designing Sleeping Beauty Castle for Disneyland. The visual resemblance is striking — though the exact nature of Disney’s inspiration has never been officially confirmed in detail.
More than 1.5 million visitors come to Neuschwanstein every year, making it one of the most visited castles in Europe.
