Germany’s Oldest City?

Kempten is widely regarded as Germany’s oldest continuously documented city. More than 2,000 years ago it was known as Cambodunum, an important Roman settlement in the province of Raetia. It is the earliest city on the territory of modern Germany to be mentioned by name in written Roman records.

Some historians point to Trier as another contender because of its continuous urban history and Roman origins. Nevertheless, there is broad agreement that Cambodunum (modern Kempten) represents the earliest documented city in what is now Germany, making it one of the country’s most fascinating historical landmarks.
